Ever thought the penaltiesimposed by UK courts for environmental crimes are too lenient? They arecompared with the US. New Jersey-based Atlantic States Cast Iron Pipe Companyhas been fined $8 million for violating environmental and health and safetylaws. The firm will also be subject to four years of monitored probation, meaning it will have to submit reports to the court twice a year. But it wasn’tjust the company that was penalised. Four employees, including a former plantmanager, received prison sentences ranging from six months to five years. Thefirm and the four employees were convicted of an eight-year conspiracy topollute the air and the Delaware River in violation of the Clean Air and CleanWater acts, as well as putting other employees at risk and attempting to coverup their activities.  That reallyis an example of making the polluter pay.
