Drivers of the most polluting cars face being charged more for parking. Richmond Council in south London, which two years ago introduced CO2-related parking charges in residents’ bays, is now pioneering on street CO2-based parking charges. From 1 October, motorists using any on street parking space in the borough will have to pay in one of three bands depending on which CO2 band their car fits into. Banding is based on the DVLA’s official guidance. Introducing CO2-related parking charges in residents’ bays was a world first and has since been copied by a number of other councils. Most will now do likewise for on street parking, providing a further financial incentive to drive low CO2-emitting vehicles. Better still, they could take the bus.
